Michel MARTELLY, who took power last Spring in Haiti, arrived in Curaҫao Wednesday night accompanied by Mr. Laurent Lamothe, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Stephanie Balmir, Minister of Tourism and Mr. Wilson Laleau, Minister of Commerce and Industry. The Haitian crowd was heavy at Plaza Brion in Otrobanda (down town).

The Haitian leader landed at Hato Airport around 9 pm. He was welcomed by the country’s Prime Minister, his excellency Gerrit Schotte, and by some members of his cabinet. He was then driven to Otrobanda where a huge Haitian crowd patiently awaited him with joy. A Haitian folkloric group (mostly young girls), in red and blue, the colors of Haiti’s flag was entertaining the crowd

The National Amptens of Haiti and Curaҫao were sung. The pres. then talked in English for few minutes, addressing the people of Curaҫao, and then for about 40 minutes in Haitain Creole, addressing the Haitian crowd. He reported that he is working very hard in Haiti to bring necessary changes. He asked Haitians in Diaspora to help him. Under his administration, over one million of kids have been attending schools; many of them were hanging out in the streets.

Free transportation has been provided to many students in the capital area. His fundraising program ($1.50 on each transfer sent to Haiti, and 5 cents on each call made) has collected many millions of dollars for education so far, and this money is untouched in the bank according to him. He talked about the level of curruption, a cancer that has ravaged Haiti. But he’s working very hard to help change the negative face of Haiti. He asked Haitians to start talking positively of Haiti.

He’s been working hard to help moving people in the streets after the terrible quake that hit Haiti in January 2010 by working on housing programs in many places of the capital, Port-au-Prince. According to him, many of the plazas where they used to camp are now empty. Business will be flourished to help with jobs. Heineken beer will soon have a plant in Haiti; other business will be soon developed, and the biggest industrial park will be soon constructed in the country.

Haiti recently inaugurated a new university in the North Haiti area (a gift of the Dominican President, Dr. Fernandez). The city of Jacmel (south east of the country) will be modernized for tourists and business and activities in other parts of Haiti. The Haitian community of Curaҫao is happy of these projects going on in Haiti under Martelly’s administration.

Haiti’s president reported that he’s trying his very best so that Haitians won’t have to risk their lives in high seas in the near future in search of a better life abroad. After a day of work with the local government (shown on local television), Mr. Martelly visited some key sites of Curaҫao and left the island later in the afternoon. The trip has been a successful one for the Haitian President.
