Congratulations to all Haitian-American candidates!

Nekita Lamour, septembre 2009

Whether you ran or are running for office in Brooklyn,  in Florida, New Jersey or Boston, you all deserve a big applause. It's good for Haitians to run for office in the United States. Our active civic participation in the United States will impact positively  the future of the next generations of Haitian- Americans,  our image abroad, and obviously policies that affect Haiti. However as a Haitian-American who ran in Malden, I sense there should be more support from the Haitian community for Haitian -American candidates. I believe stakeholders, for instance  the professionals, the academia, the religious arena, the artists, the 501c3's; in other words those whom the Haitians look up to or purport to seek the answers for Haiti's problems could and should play a more active role  in supporting civic engagement activities in the United States. Individuals from those arenas have shown tremendous support. Thanks for their unwavering contributions. Thanks to  teacher Yolette and artist Mirlande who took the initiatives to organize a fundraiser for all the candidates. Thanks to the Haitian media. They did their best to call upon to the community to support the Haitian candidates.

However, all those who were involved would like to see the participation,  a more active leadership and supportive role of these aforementioned entities in future activities that will have long and short term benefits for Haitians living in the United States and Haiti. Kudos to all of us Haitan- American candidates who took such bold risk. Whether we made it to general November elections or not, we have made a long term difference. We are all winners.

Thank you
Nekita
