Short Report on Missionary Work in Bas-de-Ste. Anne, Haiti for the Year 2005 ON
Macedonia Baptist Evangelical Missionary Church of Dupont Bas-de-Ste. Anne,
First Rural Section of Anse-A-Foleur, Northwest, Haiti WI

Wednesday, January 25, 2006

In the name of the people in Bas-de-Ste. Anne and mine, I want to thank every one of you for your contribution and support, in any forms it could have been, (prayers, books, money, advices, encouragement, schoolings, etc), to the missionary work at Bas-de-Ste. Anne in Haiti, which I am part of. I am very pleased to write this small report and to inform you of what God is doing in Bas-de-Ste. Anne and what He has allowed us to accomplish during our missionary journey in July of this year (2005). Although the remoteness of the location has presented great difficulty the work is progressing. For this reason we do not want to stay indifferent to not say thanks to the Lord, for his grace and protection upon us as well His blessings upon the people in Bas-de-Ste. Anne. We want to present our gratitude to Him with all our heart for His faithfulness. We also want to take a few minutes of your time to give you an overview of what God is doing among us and in the lives of the people in that locality... We surely do not want to fail to not thanking each and every one of you, certainly, for all your support and we want to let you know that your contribution, for the work, goes a long way and it is also of a great benefit. If it were not for your contribution the work would not be what and where it is now.

We will encourage you to stay with us in this journey with your prayers, your advices and your economic support, because the need for the work at Bas-de-Ste. Anne is great and it requires many hands, in thus in many aspects. God will not cease to bless you for your help and support towards others in needs.

We want to remind you that the work in Bas-de-Ste. Anne cannot continue or exist without your help and contribution. May God bless you all! And let us all thank God, who makes it possible for us to participate in His work. God, surely, would not forget your faithfulness. Again many thanks!

Truly your sister in combat,

Dalisna Noel

This is a brief summary of what was accomplished during
our Missionary trip in Bas-de-Ste. Anne, Haiti in July 2005

Short summary on the Travelling

a. I left Boston Friday, July 1 st. at 6:30PM for Miami Florida to meet with my sister who would accompany me on the journey. The next day we left Miami at 6:30AM to land at Port-au-Prince airport (Aéroport Toussaint Louverture) 8:00AM. At 1:00PM, we took a small plane that landed at Port-de-Paix airport at 1:45PM. After waiting and collecting our luggage, we took another cab at 4:00PM that drove us from Port-de-Paix airport to Saint-du-Nord which is one-hour and so driving, our first destination.

b. When we arrived at Saint-du-Nord, we stayed there for five days collecting and repacking our luggages while waiting for the people from the mountain to come meet us and to help us carry our luggages. On Thursday July 7, in the morning, we left Saint-du-Nord for Anse-a-Foleur to finish packing other baggages we had in storage. Then on Saturday morning, with our flashlight in hand, we left Anse-a-Foleur at 4:00AM to climb up the mountain to go to Bas-de-Ste. Anne. We arrived at 3:30PM in the afternoon.

II. Report on spiritual aspect

A. The second week of our arrival at Bas-de-Ste. Anne, we had invited a pastor named, Sayès Pascal (from Saint-Louis-du-Nord) to come preach a revival for us for four nights. Unfortunately, because of some heavy rain, he only preached for two nights, but he worked prodigiously for the full four days he was there.

  1. Pastor Sayes arrived the morning of July 21 st, and preached that night for the Church.
  2. On Friday, July 22nd in the morning the pastor presented a conference for the Church leaders entitled “The Church and its Responsibilities” where he considered the word ‘Church’ in its four aspects.
    a. Etymological aspect or the root of the word.
    b. Historical Aspect: Minority assembly of Greeks who assemble themselves to discuss the political affairs of the city.
    c. Judaical Aspect: To the political meaning of the term, the Septuagint Bible adds the word Gahal, which means assembly, specially the assembly of the people of God (Numb. 19:20; Numb. 23: 18-25 Det.23: 3, 8).
    d. Christian Aspect: The Christian aspect includes all the other aspects/meanings. Jesus-Christ  was the first person who used the word church in the Bible, which means, come out of, or  assembly of the people of God. And God is the one who calls (Ro.8:30; 2Cor.6:17).
    e. What is the Church’s primary role?
        1. To teach the salvific Word
        2. To evangelize
  3. Friday, in the afternoon, a young man named Garbar Pascal, who came with the Pastor (his cousin) met with the young people to discuss about “How to choose a friend of the opposite sex, and what they can talk about when they meet”. His presentation was very instructive and interesting.
  4. Saturday, July 23, at 6:00AM the pastor went to a river, which is about one hour walking distance from the Church, and baptized 11 people who became members of the Church.
  5. By 10 o’clock, the pastor celebrated four weddings with of four couples who were living together.
  6. Sunday, July 24, in the morning the pastor led the worship and communion service. He presented 8 children to the Lord. He preached the word of God and at the end of the worship service he prayed with 4 people who accepted the Lord as their personal Savior.
  7. Sunday afternoon, Pastor Sayès met with the couples of the church for a conference entitled “Family living”. He discussed many points on how the family should live to achieve a successful life, or with fewer problems. That was a very inspiring sermon.
  8. This year, the Church of Macedonia had a total of 11 conversions, and among them there was a man who once practiced witchcraft.

Note

*Pastor Sayès spent four good days doing the work of the Lord among us.
On Monday, July 25th early in the morning, in company of some members of The Church the pastor and his cousin climbed down the mountain to return to their home in Saint-du-Nord (which is approximately thirty to thirty five miles away from Bas-de-Ste. Anne).

III. The Week Following the Revival

1. On Tuesday morning, July 26, I presented to the brothers of Bas-de-Ste. Anne a seminar on “Leadership in the Ministry”. This seminar is based on a subject I studied with Dr. Anthony Lloyd, presented at CUME (Center for Urban Ministry Education), an extension of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary) and my personal research. The seminar lasted three days. We discussed different points, such as:

  • We have defined the terms Leadership & Ministry
Defining the terms “Leadership” & “Ministry”. Leadership is the spinal cord, the lungs, and the heart of all organization, according to Nel Carbonel of Institute of America.
  • Different types of leadership
    1. Transactional leadership = Purpose: It exists for an economical reason. Its objective is to generate profit for instance, a company of insurance, a financial investment company, an health center or an hospital, etc.
    2. Transformational leadership = Purpose: This leadership is there to invest in the individual, make him whole and raise him to a level where he/she can be sustained on his own and equipped in such a way that the individual can provide for himself, his family and be a contributor to the society (e.g., the family, the church, some great center of formation or of rehabilitation, certain clubs, or association, and most educational academies).
    3. Transactional/transformational leadership = Purpose: This leadership has a double objectives: one is to invest in the individual to help him become a better social, functional and productive or well balanced individual. The other is to make a profit and advance its personal gain while it is trying to elevate the individual to a sound point (e.g., an academic establishment, a hospital, a health fitness club, a personal professional health provider/practice of any kind, etc).

C. Types of Callings the one who is called would be subjected to = 3

1. In the sacerdotal ministry there are three types of callings

  • Call to conversion = Made to everyone
  • Call to sanctification = Three phases
    • Positional Sanctification: The one who is called is Set apart and consecrated by God Himself, through the atoning work of Christ on Calvary, to worship Him and to serve Him.
    • Progressive Sanctification: An every day’s walk with God through the study of His Word and its application in the Christian throughout their life.
    • Absolute Sanctification: This is the final stage of the process. This sanctification will take place when the believer will be with Christ in His glorious presence, in his kingdom to live forever and ever.
  • Call to Service:
God in his grace wants us to partnership with Him in the harvest of his Kingdom, and for this, He has distributed spiritual gifts to each and everyone Of his children, for them to use in toiling in his harvest, for the good functioning of His Church or His redeemed children (1Cor. 12).

D. Different forms the call to service can be presented to, or the believer may have to respond to:

  1. Circumstantial Call: The call is an urgent call; the need is there and should be satisfied in an immediate nd timely manner, for instance a church might need someone to work with the youths, the elderly, the children, or the choir (s). Among others, the Tsunami catastrophe is a classic example of an urgent circumstantial call, as well as Dr. Albert Switzer, in his extra ordinary way of responding to the Gabonese of West central Africa’s call in their quest, for medical help.
  2. Mysterious Call: The call is dramatic. It is a direct personal confrontation with God. It takes the whole person to answer to this call, eg. Moses in front of the burning bush, and Apostle Paul, as well, on the Road to Damascus.
  3. Ecclesiastic/organizational Call: This call concerns the sacerdotal or the Church. The person must be called and anointed by God, as in the case of Jesus-Christ, the Levites and the high priests in the O. T. (Old Testament), to serve in His sacerdotal. The Apostles were chosen and anointed by the Holy Spirit for God’ service. Thus, our contemporary pastors and leaders of the Church of Jesus-Christ must be called and anointed by the Holy-Spirit as well, to officiate in the kingdom of God. They need to be confirmed and ordained by the Church to serve, as of today NT (New Testament) Church’s proceed. (Luke 4:18,19; Lev.8; Act.13:2,3)
  4. Different Methods God can use to call some one to the ministry: By: A song, a sermon, a message, a prayer, through the reading of His Word, through a vision, through mentorship or advice of a responsible leader, through a call of motivation to come to help in the work of God, wherever – in the Church, in the surrounding community, abroad, etc.

E. Length of the call: In certain cases the call could be for:

a. A short time (to address or remedy at a critical situation)
b. Long time
c. Could be a life time duration, indeed.

F. Vision of the leader/Leadership = No leader/Leadership without vision.

G. Vision of Macedonia Church of Bas-de-Ste. Anne. = 2 Phases

a. Spiritual Phase: Preach, teach, and spread the salvific word.
b. Social Phase: Invest in human through education or by supporting it

H. How can the leader keep his vision alive?

When he evaluates his progress, concentrates on progress and not perfection, revises his vision and objectives periodically, uses his resources –human capital – human and materials resources accordingly.

I. How can the leader lose his vision?

When the leader gets into or adopts an “I must” syndrome or slogan, it is a preparation for failure. It is very important that the leader evaluates his resources to know if they can respond to his vision and objectives. For instance does his/her human capital, economic resources, member’s number & corporation, location, etc. help him achieve his/her plan. Because such Church or organization has done or accomplished such and such thing doesn’t mean you should or can do the same thing. Due to the fact our vision and objectives may not be the same.

K. Efficacy of the characteristics of a True leadership/Leader(s)

Prayer, facilitate participation of the people and team work, know how to take initiative, know how to communicate his intentions, integrity, discipline, capable to control his/her emotion, know how to plan in short and long term, know how to delegate responsibility, encourage group work, influence others, self confidence, know how to make disciples, know how to communicate with his/her colleagues and people in charge, know his/her limitations, learn to listen, work as and with mentor, accept and look for advise, counsel and guidance from experts when necessary.

IV. Report with Social Aspect.

  1. This year, a classmate gave me a computer. I took it to Bas-de-Ste. Anne. And I spent many days showing the school teachers and some of the students some of the basic steps on how to use the computer.
  2. This year, we continued with the rehearsal of the play we had started last year. I wrote many years ago. It's entitled “The Trials of Jesus and A Look at the Disciples’ Reactions after Jesus-Christ Death”.

V. Some special blessings God has bestowed upon the work in Bas-de-Ste. Anne for the year 2005.

Since last year (2005), three of our leaders descended from the mountain to go to Saint-du-Nord every weekend to attend a theological course presented on video; the facilitator is a young man. This course is offered every Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. The participants found it quite instructive.

An overview of the youth of Bas-de-Ste. Anne. We are helping them attending school at Saint-Louis-du-Nord, away from the mountain, in pursuit of their secondary education.

  1. Two of our youth are in their fifth year of secondary school or of what they cummunally call: “1st bac”. One of the two is classified to be the top student in his class (the preceding year).
  2. Two are in their fourth year of secondary school
  3. Two are in their second year of secondary school. They both are classified to be the top student in their class for the previous year. Individually, each attends a different school.
  4. One of them is about to graduate from elementary school this year. He needs doctor’s care since he suffers from epilepsy, and we are unable to afford the care he needs.
  5. This year while the Bas-de-Ste. Anne school is waiting for the School Department to approve its permit to function as a primary school, given the fact the eight graders have to take a National State Exam before going to secondary school, the director of the School Department, for the region, has allowed the our school to sign up the eight graders to take the National State Exam. For the first time, the school of Bas-de-Ste. Anne has prepared and sent 11children to take the National State Exam. They all successfully passed it.
  6. The adults’ literacy program is functioning with an attendance of 15 participants.
  7. Upon our descent from the mountain to Saint-du-Nord, on the advice of Marcel Estime(the brother who hosted us when we were at Saint-du-Nord), I asked Pastor Sayès Pascal if he could give us with the work at Bas-de-Ste. Anne. Thanks to God, he accepted to do so. He was well disposed to help us and has promised to go to the mountain once a month to work with the people in the Church. He will conduct seminars for leaders and youth of the Church (when the time allows it).
  8. This year, on the advice of Emanuel W. Vedrine (writer, researcher and educator), we started a small library with one hundred books that we have collected. With this thought in mind, we think of enriching it for the school’s benefit in the near future. Vedrine has given us a number of books he has written (to help teachers and students both in the Diaspora and in Haiti).Unfortunately, we couldn’t take them with us on our trip this year, but we are planning to take them to Haiti on our next trip( God’s willing).

Important Notes ****

  • The 11 students who have passed the National State Exam need additional support in order to attend the secondary school; the economic condition of their parents is very precarious. With a contribution of $50.00 or more per month, as God blesses you, you can make a big difference in one of these students’ lives.
  • CONSTRUCTION: We continue working with the construction of the school/church building. The work is very hard and difficult, taking into account the height of the mountain and the distance where it is located. Bringing materials up the mountain is extremely difficult and costly given the fact that the people have no other means of transportation other than carrying things on their shoulders.

V. Sub-vision: Considering the development of the work this year, we have conceived a sub-vision, for the work in Bas-de-Ste. Anne, with two phases.

  1. Sub-vision/Phase one/Short term: We want to help some of the teachers to complete their “classical study” so that they can be more prepared to teach in the school. We are planning to start the plan this year in helping one of the teachers to go to school (if God opens the door).
  2. Sub-vision /Phase two/Long term: In the years to come we would like to add grades 9 to 12 to the school which will allow the children (from other places), whose parents cannot afford paying for their schooling, to go further their secondary education.

Note: With God, anything is possible. He holds the key to every door. We ask you to pray and assist us in God’s work with your blessings.

Again, many thanks for your support and for allowing us to share this report with you. Your help is most needed and we continue to count on your generous contribution that will certainly work to change some of the children’s lives who have no other avenue to success.

IV. Rapport Spirituel sur l’Œuvre au Bas-de-Ste.-Anne

A. La 2ème. Semaine de notre Arrivée.

    a. Sens étymologique ou la racine du mot.

Note

A. Leadership & ministère
